Health and Safety

Home Safe Everyday (HSE)

At Hudbay Manitoba, caring for people is at the core of everything we do. Our Home Safe Everyday (HSE) initiative reflects our unwavering commitment to a positive, proactive and risk-focused safety culture.

We operate under ISO 45001 and Manitoba Made Safe certified management systems, which guide our continuous improvement and help us maintain world-class safety standards across our operations.

The program is driven by three key committees that work together to strengthen our safety culture:

  • Governance Committee: Oversees the overall HSE program, including policies, perception surveys, action tracking, fitness-for-work programs and the transition from rule-based requirements to employee-led commitments.
  • Training Committee: Focuses on building safety leadership, advancing instructor qualifications, integrating technology into training and enhancing key tool evaluations (FRA, VFL, and SIF Validation) to ensure meaningful feedback.
  • Communications Committee: Develops and implements safety communication guidelines, leverages social media and digital tools and ensures that decisions are guided by data and insights.

Significant Injury or Fatality (SIF)

Our Significant Injury or Fatality (SIF) Validation process is a proactive, fault-free approach designed to ensure that all critical safety controls are in place before and during any high-risk work. This validation helps verify that every identified control is functioning effectively to prevent serious incidents, reinforcing Hudbay’s commitment to keeping every person on site safe — every task, every shift, every day.

If a control is missing or incomplete, work is paused until the issue is resolved. All findings are tracked and analyzed to identify trends, strengthen controls, and drive continuous improvement.

We use 24 checklists covering key SIF risk areas, including energy isolation, working at heights, unsupported ground, vehicle interactions, fire safety, explosives, confined spaces, molten metal, lifting/material handling, and chemical safety.

Mine Rescue

Mine Rescue is the heartbeat of our Lalor Mine. Every worker heading underground — and their friends and families — can rely on our world-class rescue teams, ready to respond day or night.

Our rescuers are highly trained, disciplined, and methodical, as well as dedicated, confident, and courageous. With the ability to deploy hundreds of personnel across kilometres of underground tunnels, they maintain the highest global standards and respond immediately when a crisis occurs.

MAMI – Mining Association of Manitoba

For over 80 years, the Mining Association of Manitoba (MAMI) has been the leading advocate for Manitoba’s mining industry. As a non-profit trade association, MAMI represents the sector, fostering collaboration among member companies, governments, First Nations, and other stakeholders to advance mining in the province.

  • Safety Committee: MAMI’s Safety Committee focuses on accident prevention and strengthening safety programs for members. Meeting at least quarterly, the committee shares best practices, coordinates events, develops collaborative programs, hosts expert speakers, and analyzes safety data. It also supports effective workers’ compensation management and engages with stakeholders to promote safety across the industry.
  • Provincial Mine Rescue Competition: Each May, MAMI hosts its annual Provincial Mine Rescue Competition at a different operating mine. The two-day event hones the skills of mine rescue teams through challenges such as underground and first-aid rescues, technician competitions, written exams, fire-fighting tests, and practical skills events like the Perfect Square and Jaws of Life Jenga — highlighting the industry’s strong commitment to safety.
